The Kitzbühel ski area

Ski region Kitzbühel – a ski region waiting to meet its peers

Perched 800 metres above sea level between “Kitzbüheler Horn” and “Hahnenkamm”, the Kitzbühel region is superbly positioned for snow accumulation, and snow is guaranteed even in the valley from December until April. Because the ground is grassy to a height of 2000 metres – unlike other skiing regions, where the ground is mostly rock – even quite small snowfalls are sufficient to provide the conditions for long periods of carefree winter sports activities.

168kilometres of perfectly maintained pistes, 8 kilometres of marked ski trails at all levels of difficulty, action-packed snowboard fun parks, natural toboggan runs, as well as hundreds of kilometres of cross-country skiing trails and winter hiking trails are just some of the attractions that make this skiing region the ultimate winter sports paradise of the Alps, stretching over seven municipal districts and two provinces.

Beginners and (returning) newcomers to the sport can choose from the services of 6 ski schools in the region, and 55 ultramodern cable cars, and lift facilities operated by Bergbahn AG Kitzbühel – the largest cable car company in Austria – carry winter sports enthusiasts up to the snow-covered slopes, pistes, ski huts and snack bars every day.

The cable car and ski lift network throughout the region has been thoroughly overhauled – the “3S” three-cable cable car linking the Hahnenkamm / Pengelstein and Jochberg / Resterhöhe ski regions was commissioned in the 2004/05 winter season, to worldwide acclaim – opening up whole new dimensions of opportunities for skiing treks in the region. It is now possible to ski the entire length of the resort complex, from Aschau to Pass Thurn, in both directions, without having to return on one of the free ski buses.

For beginners and those returning to the sport, the region also offers a very special service, which is in fact unique in Austria in this form: In all resorts, the practice lifts in the valley can be used free of charge.

From winter's big bang
100 years ago when the skiing pioneer Franz Reisch first skied from the Kitzbüheler Horn on his “Norwegian ski boots”, it was quite a sensation; this was the big bang that launched the
development of Kitzbühel  as one of the most popular ski resorts in the world. Today, Kitzbühel is a historical town, a region and trademark in tourism. Every year the wonderful skiing, the exclusive hotels, the chic shops and famous events ensure it is never out of the world’s press as well as being at the pinnacle of most sought after holiday destinations in the Alps.

The Kitzbühel ski region includes the town and villages of Kitzbühel, Reith, Aurach, Jochberg, Pass Thurn-Mittersill and Oberpinzgau. Please visit the website of the  Kitzbühel Cable Car Company at http://www.bergbahn-kitzbuehel.at/en for further information.
