Hiking Over Several Days: 3 Days on the Kaisergebirge

Summer > Hiking > Hiking Over Several Days: 3 Days on the Kaisergebirge
The Kaisergebirge massif is the best known and most impressive mountain range in the Kitzbüheler Alpen. During this three day tour from alpine hut to alpine hut you will be hiking on the Wilder Kaiser from all sides and also get known its little brother, the "Niederkaiser". The inns are all open from the end of May onwards, and the tour can also be done in the reverse direction.

Description of the hike on the Kaisergebirge

first day
The three day tour from alpine hut to alpine hut starts in the small hamlet of Griesenau (705 m) near St. Johann in Tirol. You will hike from the Gasthof Griesenau in southward direction into a beautiful small valley and you will then reach the Kramerhof via the Grandneralm. From there the path leads through the scenic Metzgeralm up to the ridge of the Niederkaiser, from where you will have a sensational view in southward direction for the first time: Kitzbüheler Horn, Hahnenkamm and the Hohe Tauern, including Großglockner form a guard of honour! Once you can turn your attention away from the panorama, you will continue hiking in eastward direction along the ridge from the Gmailkapelle and the hermitage of Maria Blut into the valley. Then you will march at the foot of the Niederkaiser in westward direction to the first accommodation (Maurerhof, Hintergranderhof or Römerhof). Sure-footed hikers can also descend from the Maiklsteig which leads directly through the south wall.

second day
There are about 500 meters in altitude from the accomodation up to the Granderalm. From there the path leads in a constant up and down along the picturesque front of the Wilder Kaiser via the Schleier waterfall, the Graspoint-Hochalm and the "Brennende Palfen" to the Gaudeamushütte to which you will have to descend about 50 meters in altitude (Alternative: Gruttenhütte ). Here one should indeed eat enough, since now exhausting altitude meters up to the Ellmauer Tor and then to the Kopftörl at an altitude of 2,058 meters are awaiting the hiker. This highest peak of the three-day hike offers fantastic views into the heart of the Kaiser mountains. Your will need about an hour to descend from the summit to the Stripsenjochhaus.

Alternative: Sure-footed hikers not prone to vertigo can still ascend on the even more beautiful route from the "Brennenden Palfen” via the Gildensteig to the Kleine Törl and then descend via the wildly romantic Griesner Kar to the Stripsenjochhaus. The tiny Fritz Pflaum hut caters sometimes on weekdays.

third day
Those who start very early can already experience a magnificent sunrise at the Stripsenkopf. But the hike to the Feldberg at an altitude of 1,813 meters is an optical delight anyway, since you will constantly have the impressive north faces of the Kaiser mountins on your right, which have not for nothing so vain-sounding names such as Fleischbank (butcher’s stall), Totenkirchl (chapel of deaths) or Beichtstuhl (confessional). Descending along the easy level route to the Scheibenbichlam and then in the forest to the starting point at the inn "Gasthof Griesenau".
Please book your accomodation in plenty of time!
